About the Book of Psalms

Author.The Psalms are a collection rather than a single book, written by many hands over centuries. King David is named in the titles of nearly half of them and is the tradition’s central psalmist; other named writers include Asaph, the sons of Korah, Solomon, and Moses, whose Psalm 90 is the oldest. Many Psalms are anonymous.

Structure. The Psalter is arranged in five books (Psalms 1-41, 42-72, 73-89, 90-106, and 107-150), each ending with a burst of praise. It holds every kind of prayer — praise, thanksgiving, lament, confession, and trust — and includes both the shortest chapter in the Bible (Psalm 117) and the longest (Psalm 119).

Theme.The Psalms teach God’s people how to speak to God honestly, in joy and in sorrow alike. They move from complaint to confidence, from the depths to the heights, and close on a single note in Psalm 150: “Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD.”
