“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16 — King James Version
Jesus says this at night, to a Pharisee named Nicodemus who has come looking for a private answer. The verse gives the motive behind everything else in the gospel: God did not merely permit the world to be saved, He loved it enough to give.
“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
Psalms 23:1 — King James Version
David, who kept sheep before he was king, describes God the way he once described himself. The claim is not that the sheep has everything it wants, but that it lacks nothing it needs.
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”
Proverbs 3:5 — King James Version
Two commands, one positive and one negative: lean on God completely, and stop leaning on your own read of the situation. The promise attached to them arrives in the next verse — “he shall direct thy paths.”
“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
Philippians 4:13 — King James Version
Read in context this is not a verse about winning. Paul has just said he has learned to be full and to be hungry, to abound and to suffer need — the “all things” he can do through Christ includes going without.
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
Isaiah 41:10 — King James Version
God speaks to a frightened people, and the reason not to fear is never their own strength. Four times He says what He will do — I am with thee, I will strengthen thee, I will help thee, I will uphold thee.
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
Romans 8:28 — King James Version
Paul does not say all things are good. He says they work together for good, and the verse that follows names the good in view: to be conformed to the image of God's Son.
“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”
Joshua 1:9 — King James Version
Moses is dead and Joshua has to lead Israel across the Jordan without him. Three times in this chapter God tells him to be strong and of a good courage, and each time the ground of it is the same: “the LORD thy God is with thee.”
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
Psalms 46:1 — King James Version
The psalm opens with earth removed and mountains carried into the sea, and calls God a help that is present — not summoned from a distance. It is the same psalm that ends, “Be still, and know that I am God.”
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Matthew 6:33 — King James Version
This is the conclusion of the Sermon on the Mount's long argument against worry, where Jesus points at birds and lilies that neither store nor spin. Seeking first is not a bargain struck with God; it is the right ordering of a life that already has a Father who knows what it needs.
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”
Jeremiah 29:11 — King James Version
Jeremiah writes this in a letter to Israelites already deported to Babylon, and the verse before it tells them the exile will last seventy years. The hope is real, and it is not a promise that the hard thing will be short.
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
2 Corinthians 5:17 — King James Version
Paul's word is not repair but creature — something made, not mended. The old is spoken of in the past tense while the new is announced with “behold,” as if it were standing in the room.
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Psalms 119:105 — King James Version
A lamp of that era lit the next step, not the whole road, which is exactly the amount of light the verse promises. It sits inside Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the Bible, whose 176 verses are almost entirely about God's word.
“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
Isaiah 40:31 — King James Version
The verse ends a chapter that has just insisted even young men shall faint and be weary. Strength is not summoned; it is renewed, and it is renewed in those who wait.
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
Romans 12:2 — King James Version
After eleven chapters of doctrine, Paul turns to how to live, and he starts with the mind. The transformation is not a matter of trying harder but of thinking differently — and its result is knowing what God actually wants.
“And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.”
1 Corinthians 13:13 — King James Version
The last line of the chapter on charity, written to a church tearing itself apart over which gifts mattered most. Faith and hope will one day have nothing left to do; love will not.
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”
Philippians 4:6 — King James Version
“Be careful for nothing” is the King James way of saying be anxious about nothing. Paul does not tell the Philippians to stop caring, but to move the care — by prayer, and with thanksgiving — and the verse that follows promises peace that passeth all understanding.
“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”
Psalms 27:1 — King James Version
Two questions, and neither gets an answer, because neither needs one. David does not argue that there is nothing to be afraid of; he argues that whatever it is, it is smaller than God.
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28 — King James Version
The invitation is addressed to the exhausted rather than the qualified. What Jesus offers next is not the end of work but a lighter yoke — his own.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,”
Galatians 5:22 — King James Version
Fruit is singular: one life growing nine things at once, not a menu to pick from. Paul finishes the list in the next verse with meekness and temperance, then adds, “against such there is no law.”
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
Hebrews 11:1 — King James Version
The closest thing to a definition of faith in the Bible, and it uses courtroom words: substance and evidence. Everything after it in the chapter is a witness list — Abel, Noah, Abraham, Moses — of people who had the evidence before they had the thing.
“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”
Psalms 51:10 — King James Version
David prays this after the prophet Nathan confronts him over Bathsheba. He asks not to be excused but to be made — the verb is the one used of God creating in Genesis 1.
“He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”
Micah 6:8 — King James Version
Micah has just imagined a worshipper offering thousands of rams to buy God off. The answer is that God already said what He wanted, and it costs more than livestock: justice, mercy, and a humble walk.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:”
Ephesians 2:8 — King James Version
Grace is the means, faith is the hand that receives it, and neither one originates with us. Paul closes the thought in the next verse: “not of works, lest any man should boast.”
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
1 Peter 5:7 — King James Version
In the Greek this hangs off the previous verse's command to humble yourself — handing God your worry is an act of humility, not of nerve. The reason given is almost startlingly plain: “for he careth for you.”
“It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.”
Lamentations 3:22 — King James Version
This sentence sits in the middle of a book of funeral poetry over a burned Jerusalem. The next verse explains the timing: the mercies are “new every morning,” which is to say they arrive at the rate they are needed.
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”
James 1:5 — King James Version
James raises the subject of wisdom immediately after telling readers to count their trials as joy — the wisdom in question is the kind you need when life is hard. God gives it liberally and, the verse insists, without upbraiding anyone for having to ask.
“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;”
Colossians 3:23 — King James Version
Paul writes this to a congregation that included household servants with no say in their labour. It does not make the work good; it changes who the work is for.
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
Psalms 34:18 — King James Version
The verse does not promise the heart will be unbroken. It promises proximity — that a broken heart is the very place God draws near to.
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
2 Timothy 1:7 — King James Version
Paul writes from prison to a young man he is worried has grown timid. Against fear he sets three gifts, and the last of them — a sound mind — is as much a gift as the power.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8 — King James Version
The timing is the whole argument. God did not wait for us to become worth dying for, which means nothing we do afterwards makes the love more secure.
“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”
Revelation 21:4 — King James Version
John hears this from the throne after seeing a new heaven and a new earth. It is a list of removals — tears, death, sorrow, crying, pain — and each one is named rather than glossed over.

The KJV was completed in 1611, and some of its words have since shifted meaning. “Thee” and “thou” are simply the singular “you,” and “be careful for nothing” in Philippians 4:6 means be anxious about nothing rather than be careless.
